Carryover

Carryover allows irrigators to take a portion of unused water from one season into the new irrigation season.

It was first introduced in March 2007 as an emergency drought response to give water share holders in northern Victoria more flexibility in managing their water resources and choice about when to use their water allocations.

After the success of this pilot project trialling carryover with Murray and Goulburn irrigators, the Victorian Government announced permanent carryover later that year.

A review of the carryover rules to give users greater choice in managing water is being conducted through the Northern Region Sustainable Water Strategy. After consultation with stakeholders, the Minister for Water announced an amendment to the rules in February 2009 to allow irrigators to carry over more water under these terms and conditions:
