Gippsland Lakes Algal Bloom

The Gippsland Lakes have been affected by an algal bloom (Synechococcus species) since November 2007.

Between early January 2008 and early May 2008, the algal bloom reached levels that were potentially harmful to human health. The bloom has since declined and signs and information warning the public not to come into contact with the affected water were removed in early May 2008.

The algal bloom has not disappeared completely, but is at low levels that would not trigger health warnings.
