Groundwater Monitoring

Continual monitoring of groundwater quality and availability is critical to guard against over-extraction and to ensure reserves do not become stressed or drop below sustainable levels. DSE’s Groundwater and Licensing Branch (GLiB) is the Victorian Government’s lead organisation responsible for overseeing the monitoring and management of Victoria’s groundwater resources.

The State Observation Bore Network comprises 2500 strategically placed bores throughout the state that are used to monitor groundwater levels, water quality and interaction between groundwater and surface water systems.

The information that is gathered through monitoring provides water resource managers with key data and knowledge to enable sustainable use and long term planning in relation to groundwater resources.
