Streamflows - September 2009

Good rainfall in the first and last weeks of September, in addition to the average rainfall of July and August, has contributed to much improved streamflow across Victoria.

At the end of the month, 8 of the 28 representative stations recorded flows above 100% of the long-term September average, while flows at another 2 stations were between 80 and 99% of the long-term average. Only 3 stations recorded no flows at the end of September. Notably, despite good rainfall in the catchment, the Moorabool River at Batesford was one of the stations which recorded no flow. This was due to the Moorabool and Lal Lal Reservoirs capturing as much water as possible during flow events.

The highest flow of 288% of the long-term September average was recorded in the Goulburn River at Doherty’s. Flow in the Yarra River at Millgrove was also significantly above average at the end of the month, flowing at 1,812 ML/day – 211% of the long-term September average.

Of the 28 representative stations, 24 have flows higher than September during the 1982/83 drought.
