Water Conservation

All Victorians need to be involved in water conservation if we want water security. Our water saving efforts have meant that our water storages are at a higher level than they would have been without conservation.

We will continue to develop our approach to water conservation and household and industrial use of water, building on the excellent effort of Victorians to conserve water.

  • Melbourne has reduced its water use in 2007 by 34 per cent per person when compared to the 1990s.
  • The Water Smart Gardens and Homes Rebate Scheme has saved more than 1.8 billion litres of water since 2003 by providing 193,000 rebates, including more than 25,000 for rainwater tanks.
  • More than 200,000 free water efficient showerheads have been provided to Victorians in exchange for their old, inefficient models.
  • Around 100,000 households in metropolitan Melbourne and 10,000 households from Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong will be encouraged to reduce water use in their homes by participating in the new WaterSmart program.
