The Sustainable Irrigation Program is administered by the Department of Sustainability and Environment and has annual State funding in the order of $15 million.
The program:
- Develops and implements land and water management plans (LWMPs) in major irrigation regions to lower the environmental impact of irrigation and improve farm water use efficiency;
- Underpins LWMP implementation with strategic investment in research and development projects;
- Ensures Victoria remains compliant with its salinity impact obligations under Schedule C of the Murray Darling Basin Agreement - the Basin Salinity Management Strategy; and
- Guides irrigation development to meet sustainability and best practice objectives.
