Eastern Treatment Plant

The Eastern Treatment Plant was opened in 1975 to serve Melbourne's growing population. It treats about 42 per cent of Melbourne's sewage, or about 370 million litres a day. Some of the treated effluent from the plant is recycled at vineyards, sports grounds and nurseries on the Mornington Peninsula. Melbourne Water, EPA Victoria and the community are developing plans for a multi-million dollar upgrade of the plant. Students will learn how sewage is treated using state of the art technology; how Melbourne Water is reducing ammonia to improve water recycling opportunities; how methane gas and sludge are recycled at the plant; and how biogas will be used to generate electricity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Teachers are provided with education kits including fact sheets and work sheets – all linked to CSF II/VCE study designs.
