Melbourne's Daily Water Consumption

Target 155 - How We're Tracking

Graph of Melbourne average daily water consumption

The above reports residential water use for the week ending 8am each Thursday.  Over Christmas and New Year 2008/09, the report used data ending 8am Tuesday.  This enabled communication of target information prior to public holidays.  Thus, the period ending Tuesday 23 December 2008 used only 5 days of water consumption data to estimate weekly water use.

How We Calculate Consumption

180 litres per person was the average daily consumption over summer 2007-08.

Melbourne’s progress on achieving Target 155 is estimated weekly and reported every Friday. Achievement of the target each week is calculated by:

  • Aggregating weekly water use in Melbourne
  • Subtracting water used for purposes other than household use.  Business use changes seasonally in Melbourne as a result of a range of social and production factors.  The amount subtracted will incorporate an assessment of these factors.
  • Dividing by Melbourne’s population
  • Dividing by 7 days

This will provide an estimate of whether Melbourne has hit the target for the week.

Notes

  1. The average water consumption in litres per person per day has been calculated using the reported permanent population of the relevant water district and annual residential water consumption for that district as reported by the responsible water corporation for the 2008/09 financial year.
  2. It should be noted that the peak population of certain towns will be higher during holiday periods.
