Water Use in Business & Industry
Did you know? … Households used more than 60 per cent of Melbourne's water in 2007-08.
Melbourne’s industry and businesses use less than half as much water as Melbourne's households and they use almost 40 per cent less water than they did in the 1990s.
The Support 155 program is helping businesses of all sizes commit to saving water, through assistance such as water saving audits and management plans.
The Victorian Government has a number of initiatives in place to help industry reduce its water use:
- The Government has committed to work with industry to reduce non-residential water usage in Melbourne by 13 billion litres by 2015. In 2007-08 alone the sector saved 8 billion litres.
- Melbourne’s retail water corporations work with industrial customers which are high users of water to develop water management action plans (WaterMAPs).
- It is now mandatory for all non-residential customers consuming more than 10 million litres per annum to develop a WaterMAP.
